Who says there's no such thing as a free lunch? In Baltimore, courtesy of the taxpayers, all breakfasts and lunches in all schools within city boundaries are being offered to all students, regardless of income level.
The Baltimore Sun reported the free food program is part of a federal entitlement that lets schools in high-poverty areas bypass the normal subsidized meal structure and instead, provide breakfasts and lunches for free.
Baltimore is among a few Maryland districts taking advantage. Maryland's General Assembly adopted the program just this year.
"We know that nutritious, balanced meals has a direct correlation to positive outcomes for our students," said Keith Haynes, the delegate who served as the main sponsor of the legislation, calling the entitlement a "great equalizer" for students, the Baltimore Sun reported. "And we know not everyone has access to that."
Fully 84 percent of city students qualified for reduced or free school meals in 2015 so far. But now, nobody has to pay – except the taxpayer.
"This means from Day 1 to Day 180, every child will have a free school lunch and they will be focused on their academics," said one principal, Renee Browning, who welcomed the free breakfast and lunch program with open arms, the Baltimore Sun reported.
