Maryland politico defies judge and opens with Jesus prayer: I'll 'go to jail for it'

A Carroll County, Md., commissioner said the heck with what a U.S. District judge said and went ahead and opened this week’s meeting with a prayer that invoked the name of Jesus Christ.

Commissioner Robin Bartlett Frazier said she’d go to jail for the right to say Jesus during a meeting prayer — just two days after a judge, on the heels of an atheist group’s pressing, issued a preliminary injunction that barred any type of sectarian prayer during government gatherings, The Blaze reported.

Frazier didn’t care. She said, prior to opening with a prayer that invoked Jesus more than once, that: “I’m willing to go to jail for it. I believe this is a fundamental of America, and if we cease to believe that our rights come from God, we cease to be America. We’ve been told to be careful. But we’re going to be careful all the way to communism if we don’t start standing up and saying ‘no.'"

The American Humanist Association joined with several local residents to claim that the mention of Jesus during public prayers of government bodies violated the Constitution because it pushed one religion over another.

The Carroll County Times reported that such prayers were supposed to come to a stop until the judge could determine which way to go with a lawsuit that’s been launched against the county.

Now foes are up in arms about Frazier's prayer.

“Commissioner Frazier spoke at length in brazen defiance of the federal judge’s order,” said Bruce Hake, one plaintiff in the case who attended the Thursday meeting and witnessed Frazier's remarks.

And one of the lawyers for the plaintiffs, Monica Miller, said that while she’s not going to seek contempt charges against Frazier this time, she just might if she does it again in the future, The Blaze reported.

“Of course, it’s entirely possible that the commissioner wishes to become a public martyr of sorts for Christianity, a celebrity upon whom religious sympathizers can bestow admiration and encouragement,” Miller wrote, in a letter reported upon by The Blaze. “If that’s the case, and if she therefore ignores both the court and this warning, she will no doubt get her wish.”

Michelle Obama opts for the $8,400 per night hotel for week-long China trip

Michelle Obama: Let them eat cake!

Not all the costs are in, but so far Michelle Obama's soft-sell public relations tour — little more than a vacation, some say — to China includes her stay at a hotel that charges $8,400 a night.

The first lady is staying at the presidential suite in the 5-star Westin Hotel at Chaoyang, located near the U.S. Embassy, USA Today reported. That’s the same hotel that was deemed as too expensive for vice president Joe Biden when he made the trip in December, The Daily Caller reported.

Documents from the Federal Business Opportunities reported by the Weekly Standard revealed that Biden was pressed to find cheaper digs during his visit. The memo: “Westin Chaoyang — price was prohibitive when compared with St. Regis — otherwise met requirements.”

The memo also explained: “Westin Choayang expressed interest [in serving Biden] and was considered. In preliminary price comparisons, the costs were tens of thousands of dollars over the St. Regis. We requested a price reduction but a great cost difference remained.”

So Biden instead took over the St. Regis Hotel — which ultimately cost $384,479 for 213 hotel rooms, The Daily Caller reported.

Obama is reportedly staying at the Westin with her daughters and mother. It’s not clear if taxpayers are paying full-price for the rooms.

The first lady is on a weeklong trip to the region for what the White House described as a “person-to-person” soft diplomatic tour — that doesn’t include any members of the press but is still paid by taxpayers.

She remarked on her first “wonderful” day in the capital city: “We had an opportunity to meet with students. I tried my hand at ping pong — not so good. And our visit to the Forbidden City is one that we will never forget. Being able to see my mother, who doesn’t get to travel internationally often, walk throughout that ancient city, and to see her excitement and wonder, is a moment that I will treasure forever,” USA Today reported.

Her trip has sparked some backlash by some who wonder why she won’t answer media questions, but is still traveling on the taxpayer dime.

Ben Rhodes, the deputy national security adviser for communications, clarified that Obama’s trip simply “sends a message that the relationship between the United States and China is not just between leaders — it’s a relationship between peoples.”

Obamacare glitch leaves heart attack vicitm with $400K bill

Another happy Obamacare customer ...

A man in Las Vegas who thought he was covered under his state’s Obamacare exchange just learned — after having a heart attack — he wasn’t, and he’s now been stuck with the $400,000-plus medical bill.

Larry Basich, 62, told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that he signed up for Obamacare months ago, using his state’s Internet exchange site. He selected UnitedHealthcare in November, and said he called repeatedly to confirm that he was in fact enrolled —and then he even paid for it.

Basich said he never received written notification of his coverage, but that Nevada Health Link officials told him on the phone not to worry, that he was enrolled, The Blaze reported.

He then had a heart attack and underwent a triple bypass surgery.

Much to his surprise, he then learned that he wasn’t insured — and that he was going to be responsible for the full cost of his medical treatments.

Fox News reported that the contractor for the state exchange, called Xerox, “reportedly tried to assign Basich's bills to another insurance plan, but that plan is refusing to accept them. Basich's insurance broker also complained that Xerox is spending a lot of time lawyering up and documenting all of Basich's communications.”

The contractor, however, said to the Las Vegas Review-Journal that it’s trying to work out the situation with Basich.
