Happy Birthday, U.S. Constitution

Today, Sept. 17, 2012, is the 225th anniversary of the signing of our Constitution at the Philadelphia  Convention in 1787.

The preamble of the Constitution reads: "We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

Hillary gets tough on Libya -- with philosophy

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, one day after the attack on the U.S. Embassy in Libya that left four Americans dead: How can something like this happen, anyway?

From a Times247.com posting: “How can this happen in a country we help liberate, in a city [Benghazi] we helped save from destruction?” Clinton said that question “reflects just how complicated, and at times, how confounding the world can be.”

Oh boy. We've got chaos at our embassies, four dead, and an American body being dragged through the streets of Benghazi to the cheers of madcap Islamists, and get-tough Hillary wants to wax philosophical on the complexities of the world.

Good show. That ought to curb the violence. What's next, Hillary? A U.S.-sponsored lecture at the United Nations entitled, "Why Can't We All Get Along?"

Embassy attacks highlight Obama's weaknesses

Obama's big reaction to the attacks on U.S. embassies in Libya and Egypt, and the murder of four Americans: We promise a full and thorough investigation.

That's hardly a comfort. Career diplomat J. Christopher Stevens' body, after all, was reportedly dragged through the streets of Libya. And now the latest news -- which comes in conflict with initial reports that the embassy stormings were sparked by a California filmmaker's negative portrayal of Muhammed -- is that al Qaeda actually plotted the attacks. Obama, meanwhile, is "working with the Libyan government to bring to justice" the attackers, according to statements he made at a press conference.

Kind of soft, if you ask me.

Even Libya's response seems stronger:

"I do condemn the cowardly act of attacking the US consulate and the killing of Mr Stevens and the other diplomats," Deputy Prime Minister Mustafa Abushagur said on his Twitter account. "Amb. Stevens was a friend of Libya and we are shocked at the attacks on the U.S. consulate." Abushagur said in a subsequent tweet: "I condemn these barbaric acts in the strongest possible terms. This is an attack on America, Libya and free people everywhere."

Remember, attacks on embassies can be viewed at worst, as acts of war and at best, as warlike actions. In light of that, Obama's promise to work with Libya rings particularly weak.

Teachers' unions strike -- no doubt for the good of the children

In yet another example of teachers' unions putting children and not personal interests first, Chicago's finest educators have gone on strike, the same day school was supposed to start.

School officials are falling back on contingency plans to open 144 of the system's schools for limited hours of operation, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The school had offered teachers a 16 percent pay cut -- but that was apparently too low an amount to stomach. An estimated 25,000 union members reported instead to picketing duty, bright and early Monday morning.

In typical thug union fashion, they turned out in droves to do their "dance" for justice, fair pay and, no doubt while the pupils watched from school windows, fascist-inspired demands for special treatment for perceived self-importance.

Here's a good quote from the Chicago Tribune:

“I think people feel like they've been bullied, so they want to say, ‘OK, let's do this, let's dance,'” said Jay Rehak, a union delegate and veteran high school English teacher. “We know a strike is really going to be painful. People will be hurt on both sides. But in the end, it's like saying, ‘I'll be bloodied and you'll be bloodied, but at least you'll know not to bully me again.'”

Time to pull out the red sashes and don the red kerchiefs. The end of summer and return to school in Chicago certainly brings out the revolutionaries.

Dukakis: Don't be a hypocrite

Ok, this statement just cannot go unchallenged. It comes from a Sept. 4 ABC News report:

Michael Dukakis said there is something Americans need to know about Mitt Romney: the “absolute mess” he made of Massachusetts when he was governor of the state.

“When he was governor, my state was 47th out of 50th in job creation under this guy, who by the way, when he ran for governor said exactly the same thing, that he was a business guy, knew all about the economy, and, he really was a disastrous economic leader,” Dukakis, who is also a former governor of Massachusetts and was the Democratic presidential candidate in 1988, told ABC News’ Jonathan Karl.

Dukakis is decrying Mitt Romney's leadership? Calling Mitt a "disastrous economic leader?"

Because of Dukakis, and because of Dukakis' absolute failure to stimulate the economy and foster job growth in Massachusetts during his own years of service as governor -- I joined the Army. That's right. The economy in my former home Bay State was so bad, I joined the Army to pay my bills.

So please, former Gov. Dukakis, think before you speak. You, too, have a record that can be recalled. It goes something like this: Lay-offs. Pink slips. Cut-backs. Firings. Closings.

No doubt military recruitment was at an all-time high, though.
